As we have seen, the public’s opinion of President Hoover’s attempts to address the needs of the people during the Great Depression cost him the election of 1932. Instead, Franklin Delano Roosevelt won the election, mostly on the promise of a New Deal. In this unit, we will learn about the New Deal programs and how Roosevelt changed the role of government in people’s lives.
Throughout this week we will analyze the effectiveness of the New Deal programs, but we will also analyze its program’s unparalleled increase in governmental regulation of the economy, in order to answer the question “is helping the poor worth the cost?
But first, we will investigate the election of 1932 and the the methods each candidate planned to use in addressing the Great Depression.
